Art at Campbell

At Campbell, we believe that the student is an artist, and the art classroom is our art studio. We believe in fostering observation, exploration of materials, cultural exposure, critical thinking, understanding of design, and responding to the natural world around us. In a typical art class, artists have wide ranging opportunities for choice of 2-D and 3-D materials and processes, including drawing, painting, collage, clay, sculpture, fibers, and printmaking; and experienced guidance to develop their unique ideas. Regular mini lessons designed to develop skills and exposure to a variety of artists across time and place accompany a rich studio experience with purposeful reflection and peer critique. Students examine and practice all aspects of the artistic process including idea generation and development, problem solving and self-assessment.

Our primary curriculum resource is the Davis Publications online resource series, Explorations in Art.  We strive to make connections with the classroom curriculum especially as it relates to spring and fall learning expeditions. Students are encouraged to be accepting of not only others but of themselves, to honor others’ ideas and be sensitive to others’ feelings. Please look at their artwork with this in mind. Ask your child to talk about their artwork and ideas. Use questions like, “What would you like to tell me about your picture?” or “Can you explain what your picture is about?” Designate a space in your home for displaying artwork and another space where your artist can draw and create, ideally together with their grownup. Drawing will improve observation skills and attention span.
